Lucksome is a relatively new studio without a great many titles under its belt. But they are doing their best to change that as quickly as possible and have recently released two great games, Coins on Fire and Saint Nicked. The latter is a Xmas special featuring a very “tired and emotional” Santa and Rudolph and a huge array of bonus features.

Coins on Fire, which we’ll take a look at here, is a horse of a different colour altogether. It’s Lucksome’s first retro-style slot release. As such, it has a 3×3 grid with only five paylines and an assortment of old-school slot symbols on the reels. This is set against a background miming an eighties video slot.

The production values are high, so the whole concept works, and the game provides a very enjoyable playing experience, especially if you’re a fan of retro slots. Under the hood, however, it’s all modern, with medium to high volatility and a good theoretical RTP of 96.28%.

Bet levels start at 0.05 per spin and go all the way up to 250.00. Thanks to the game’s bonus round, the maximum potential jackpot is 1,000x jackpot. With the Extra Respins option, this can also be activated with a higher RTP of 96.64%.

Game Features

The 9 pay symbols in Coins of Fire are divided into 4 low pays, 3 mid pays, and 2 premiums. The low pays are classic slot symbols; cherries, lemons, grapes, and plums. The maximum payout from these is 1.6x the bet for three plums. Mid pays keep the classic theme going with BAR symbols, silver sevens, and blue sevens, paying up to 4x the bet for three on a payline. 

The premiums are red sevens and fire coins. Fire coins are the most valuable, worth 16x the bet. The fire coins also act as the game’s Wilds, so they will stand in for other symbols to form winning combinations. And here would be a good place to mention that, with such a small grid, the only winning combo that can be formed is three matching symbols.

The big bonus in Coins on Fire is a Respins Feature. Symbols will sometimes land with Coins overlays with different values on them. If these appear simultaneously as fire coins, the Respins feature is triggered. The number of respins is the total values displayed on the coin overlays. The fire coins stick in place during the respins and act as wilds. And coin overlays can still land, adding more respins to the remaining total!

An Extra Respins option guarantees additional respins when the round is triggered. Activating this will cost you more per spin, but you are guaranteed a higher RTP in the bonus round. Remember, all wins will be calculated using your original bet, not the higher price per spin you are paying with the activated option. 

Overall, Lucksome has done a great job with Coins on Fire for their first attempt at a retro slot. The gameplay is enjoyable, the production is excellent, and it’s all backed by a solid maths model with a very good RTP.
